"Though He slay me, I will hope in Him.
Nevertheless I will argue my ways before him."
Job 13:15 (NASB)
During
times of great trial, especially when it doesn't seem like I am at fault for
what has transpired, I seek to make myself free of all blame for whatever
situation I may be finding myself in. It is natural for me, and I'm sure for
pretty much everyone else out there, to want to be blameless when things are
not going very well for me. I cannot claim what Job is claiming here in this
passage. I cannot argue before God that my ways are blameless before him.
However, what Job is doing in this passage is something we should all feel
encouraged to do.
In
spite of his awful circumstances, Job makes the radical claim, "Though He
slay me, I will hope in Him. Nevertheless I will argue my ways before him"
(13:15).
Why
is this such a radical statement to make? It is a radical statement to make
because Job has lost everything in the world that held any meaning to him, yet
he is still clinging with confidence to his relationship with God. It is his
last stronghold in life now that he has lost his family and all of his
possessions. Job is in his deepest and darkest moment of life, and yet, he can
still praise God. He still trusts in God. He still has confidence in God that
he will answer him and that he cares for him. His confidence in God allows him
to express his honest feelings to God without the fear of getting punished for
it.
This
is what I should feel encouraged to do too! In the deepest and darkest moments
of my life, I will continue to put my trust wholly in God and I know that I can
have confidence in him. I know that I can share my deepest thoughts with God
without having to fear that God will be angry with me.

Prayer:
Heavenly
Father! Give me the strength and the confidence to keep my hope in you the next
time I go through a difficult time in my life. Help me to have the confidence
of Job so that I can trust in you and so that I can remain open and honest with
you. Thank you for the strength that you give to me each day in all the ups,
downs, and middles of life! Amen.
