Sing For Joy To God! Praise Him For All He Has Done!

"Sing for joy to God our strength! I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt."
Psalm 81:1a, 10a (NIV1984)

During Lent we look forward to the coming of Easter Sunday, the day that we are filled with overwhelming joy and celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the dead. This is our great reason to sing for joy to God. This is why we are called to sing for joy in so many different ways. However, Jesus' resurrection from the dead is not our only reason for singing praise to God!

In our passage today (Psalm 81), the psalmist not only tells us that it is a decree for Israel and an ordinance of God that the people sing for joy to God, but he also lists out many reasons for the people of Israel to praise God. God moved the burdens of the people and set their hands free from the work of slavery in Egypt. He set them free from Egypt and provided for all of their needs. He heard their calls of distress and answered them when they were wandering in the desert. These are only just a few of the reasons that the people of Israel had to motivate themselves to sing for joy to God their strength!

We may have never experienced slavery in our own lives, but we recognize that many people still do today. We may have never had a horrible burden of physical labor forced upon us in our own lifetimes, but we know that this is the plight of many people even today. We may have never experienced true starvation and thirst in our lives, but we understand that people die of these evils daily. Although we may not have experienced the evils of slavery, forced labor, and starvation and thirst, we have all experienced hardships and the results of sin, evil, and death in the world.

No matter what hardships we have experienced in life as followers of Jesus Christ, we know that God has everything in control and that he has the power to release us from our troubles. He has done so in the past and continues to do so today for those who love him and listen to him. Those are the occasions when we experience the overwhelming need to sing for joy to God who is our strength just as the Israelites did thousands of years ago. Sing for joy to God who is your strength today. Praise him for all he has done in your life and also for all he has done for his people throughout history!

Prayer:

God of my strength, I sing for joy and praise you for your mighty works. I have had many falls in my life and you have been there to pick me up each and every time. Not only that, but you willingly died in my place and have forgiven me of all of my sins. You are my God and you are my strength. Strengthen me to always rely on you throughout my life and give me the boldness to express my gratitude to others. Amen!

God's Requirements For Life: What Do Your Priorities Look Like?

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.  And what does the L ORD require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  - Micah 6:8 (NIV) As Christians, we often tout the Bible as God’s handbook on life, but all too often find ourselves at a loss as to where the sections that show us how to live are.  All throughout the Old Testament, God’s people relied on the Law (the first five books of the Bible, also known as Torah) to know how God wanted them to live.  This was a great gift from God to show them how he intended them to be holy people and to show them that they did not measure up to God’s standards for holiness.   The problem, however, was that they often got caught up in the intricate details and ignored the true priorities that God had for their lives.  They thought that the most important thing to do was to make sure that their sacrifices at the temple were done properly and they also made sure that they s...

Placing God First Is A Family Activity

"I always put the LORD in front of me; I will not stumble because he is on my right side."  Psalms 16:8 (CEB) This verse is a recognition of the truth of God's guidance in our lives. A similar verse is one of my childhood favorites, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (KJV). As long as we put God first in our lives, we cannot fail and we will not stumble and fall because he will be right there at our side to keep us on the "straight and narrow." How good is it to know that it is impossible to fail in life when we place God at the front of our lives? I believe that this is great news that cannot be repeated enough!  This truth applies to all aspects of life, especially parenting. As parents, it is our responsibility to model this truth to our children and to teach them to do the same in their own lives. It is important to not be deceived into thinking that this is a promise for an easy life, for easy parenting, or for a...

Made Alive With Christ On Halloween

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-5 (NIV1984) Happy Halloween! Happy Reformation Day! Happy All Hallows Eve! Today is the day of the year that many choose to celebrate evil, death, devils, witches, and many other abhorrent things and ideas while others celebrate the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg. Today is also the eve of the day that the church celebrates the lives of all...
