Seek God's Guidance In Every Situation

The Israelites took some of their supplies, but they didn't ask for any decision from the LORD.
Joshua 9:14 (CEB)

How often have I gone through my day and made a lot of decisions, but didn't once go to God for direction?  Sadly, as I look back on just the last few weeks, I can see that that has been my modus operandi.  After reading this verse in Joshua, it made me reflect on how I have not been bringing my decisions to God for direction on a regular basis.

The context of this passage is during the Israelites' entry into the Promised Land.  God had told them to no make treaties with any of the inhabitants of the land because they were to wipe out the whole population of the Promised Land.  To enter into a treaty would mean that they could not fulfill this task that God gave them.  However, they were tricked by the Gibeonites into entering into a treaty.  They were slightly hesitant, but instead of relying on God's judgment, they went ahead and were fooled by the false evidence that they were presented with!

The challenge to us today is to not repeat this mistake that the Israelites made.  The consequences were severe.  They could not longer wipe out the entire population of the Canaanites because they had entered into a solemn treaty with them in the name of the LORD.  They could not fix this situation since it would mean taking the LORD's name in vain to do so.

Seek God's guidance in every situation you face today, whether big or small.  Jesus promised the gift and presence of the Holy Spirit to those who have placed their faith in Christ.  Trust in him and rely on him for all aspects of your life.  If we rely on his guidance, we can be sure that we will remain firmly within his will for our lives.

God's Requirements For Life: What Do Your Priorities Look Like?

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.  And what does the L ORD require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  - Micah 6:8 (NIV) As Christians, we often tout the Bible as God’s handbook on life, but all too often find ourselves at a loss as to where the sections that show us how to live are.  All throughout the Old Testament, God’s people relied on the Law (the first five books of the Bible, also known as Torah) to know how God wanted them to live.  This was a great gift from God to show them how he intended them to be holy people and to show them that they did not measure up to God’s standards for holiness.   The problem, however, was that they often got caught up in the intricate details and ignored the true priorities that God had for their lives.  They thought that the most important thing to do was to make sure that their sacrifices at the temple were done properly and they also made sure that they s...

Placing God First Is A Family Activity

"I always put the LORD in front of me; I will not stumble because he is on my right side."  Psalms 16:8 (CEB) This verse is a recognition of the truth of God's guidance in our lives. A similar verse is one of my childhood favorites, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (KJV). As long as we put God first in our lives, we cannot fail and we will not stumble and fall because he will be right there at our side to keep us on the "straight and narrow." How good is it to know that it is impossible to fail in life when we place God at the front of our lives? I believe that this is great news that cannot be repeated enough!  This truth applies to all aspects of life, especially parenting. As parents, it is our responsibility to model this truth to our children and to teach them to do the same in their own lives. It is important to not be deceived into thinking that this is a promise for an easy life, for easy parenting, or for a...

Made Alive With Christ On Halloween

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-5 (NIV1984) Happy Halloween! Happy Reformation Day! Happy All Hallows Eve! Today is the day of the year that many choose to celebrate evil, death, devils, witches, and many other abhorrent things and ideas while others celebrate the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg. Today is also the eve of the day that the church celebrates the lives of all...
