Finding True Love on Valentine's Day

“Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.”
- 1 John 3:18 (NIV1984)

Happy Valentine’s Day!  The day we celebrate love.  However, do you notice the narrow and shallow view of love that is often portrayed by advertisers and big companies on Valentine’s Day?  Love is portrayed as romantic (not a bad thing by any means!) and full of romantic gestures (again, not a bad thing!).  Yes, this is one very small and important aspect of love, but is that all that love is?

In John’s first letter in the New Testament, he is writing to encourage his readers and hearers to continue hold strong to their faith and to be people of love.  Why would they need to be people of love?  They need to be people of love because we are told that “God is love” (v. 4:8).  If we want to be known as people of God, we need to be people of love!

Now, how can we be people of love?  Not only are we supposed to have nice loving thoughts for someone or say loving things, but we are also called to love each other through our actions.  We are called to love with action and truth.  We are called to be genuine in our actions of love for others.  We are never forced to love someone.  It is something that we are compelled to do because God showed us what love is by setting the ultimate example of love for us.  He sent his one and only son to die for our sins.  We are told that there is “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).  We are called to love by making sacrifices for others.  Laying down our own comfort and our own desires to promote the comfort and desires of someone else is what showing true love is.

We find true love by showing love to others, so let's help others find true love today! Show someone that you love them!  Show them that you truly have love that is modeled after the love that was displayed by Jesus Christ when he laid down his life for you and for me.  Be loved and blessed today!

God's Requirements For Life: What Do Your Priorities Look Like?

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.  And what does the L ORD require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  - Micah 6:8 (NIV) As Christians, we often tout the Bible as God’s handbook on life, but all too often find ourselves at a loss as to where the sections that show us how to live are.  All throughout the Old Testament, God’s people relied on the Law (the first five books of the Bible, also known as Torah) to know how God wanted them to live.  This was a great gift from God to show them how he intended them to be holy people and to show them that they did not measure up to God’s standards for holiness.   The problem, however, was that they often got caught up in the intricate details and ignored the true priorities that God had for their lives.  They thought that the most important thing to do was to make sure that their sacrifices at the temple were done properly and they also made sure that they s...

Placing God First Is A Family Activity

"I always put the LORD in front of me; I will not stumble because he is on my right side."  Psalms 16:8 (CEB) This verse is a recognition of the truth of God's guidance in our lives. A similar verse is one of my childhood favorites, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (KJV). As long as we put God first in our lives, we cannot fail and we will not stumble and fall because he will be right there at our side to keep us on the "straight and narrow." How good is it to know that it is impossible to fail in life when we place God at the front of our lives? I believe that this is great news that cannot be repeated enough!  This truth applies to all aspects of life, especially parenting. As parents, it is our responsibility to model this truth to our children and to teach them to do the same in their own lives. It is important to not be deceived into thinking that this is a promise for an easy life, for easy parenting, or for a...

Made Alive With Christ On Halloween

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-5 (NIV1984) Happy Halloween! Happy Reformation Day! Happy All Hallows Eve! Today is the day of the year that many choose to celebrate evil, death, devils, witches, and many other abhorrent things and ideas while others celebrate the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg. Today is also the eve of the day that the church celebrates the lives of all...
