What Are You Thankful For?

“I thank my God always for you, because of God’s grace that was given to you in Christ Jesus.  That is, you were made rich through him in everything: in all your communication and every kind of knowledge.”
- 1 Corinthians 1:4-5 (CEB)

What are you thankful to God for?  What is it that causes you to be thankful today?  We are in that season of Thanksgiving again and we get to share with each other what we are thankful for!  Paul’s source of joy was his faith in Jesus Christ.  He believed that Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection paid the penalty for his sins and that he was promised eternal life with Christ.  In this passage, he explains to the Corinthians that he is thankful for them as well.  Why?  Because they too have experienced the same thing that Paul experienced; an enrichment through Christ in everything!

Have you experienced this enrichment in everything through Christ?  Has your life been changed because of your faith?  If so, you have more reason to give thanks today and for all eternity than the person who lives in complete financial security.  You have more reason to be thankful than the person who drives a new car, who has a better job than you, a better house than you, and a nicer family than you!

This season of Thanksgiving in America seems to be defined by thankfulness for all of the material blessings that we have received.  It is not necessarily a bad thing to be thankful for material blessings, since God is our provider (whether or not you affirm that!), but isn't there more to be thankful for than material wealth?  Yes, some people do claim thankfulness for their “friends and family,” which is good too!  However, are you truly thankful for what God has done for you through Jesus Christ?  Through Jesus Christ, you have been “made rich through him in everything!”  We are forgiven of all of our sins, we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are given spiritual gifts (verse 1:7), and we are given each other, the Church!  Thank God today for the many blessings he has given you, especially the free gift of salvation through his Son, Jesus Christ.  Be blessed and give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!

Happy Thanksgiving!

God's Requirements For Life: What Do Your Priorities Look Like?

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.  And what does the L ORD require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  - Micah 6:8 (NIV) As Christians, we often tout the Bible as God’s handbook on life, but all too often find ourselves at a loss as to where the sections that show us how to live are.  All throughout the Old Testament, God’s people relied on the Law (the first five books of the Bible, also known as Torah) to know how God wanted them to live.  This was a great gift from God to show them how he intended them to be holy people and to show them that they did not measure up to God’s standards for holiness.   The problem, however, was that they often got caught up in the intricate details and ignored the true priorities that God had for their lives.  They thought that the most important thing to do was to make sure that their sacrifices at the temple were done properly and they also made sure that they s...

Placing God First Is A Family Activity

"I always put the LORD in front of me; I will not stumble because he is on my right side."  Psalms 16:8 (CEB) This verse is a recognition of the truth of God's guidance in our lives. A similar verse is one of my childhood favorites, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (KJV). As long as we put God first in our lives, we cannot fail and we will not stumble and fall because he will be right there at our side to keep us on the "straight and narrow." How good is it to know that it is impossible to fail in life when we place God at the front of our lives? I believe that this is great news that cannot be repeated enough!  This truth applies to all aspects of life, especially parenting. As parents, it is our responsibility to model this truth to our children and to teach them to do the same in their own lives. It is important to not be deceived into thinking that this is a promise for an easy life, for easy parenting, or for a...

Made Alive With Christ On Halloween

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions - it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-5 (NIV1984) Happy Halloween! Happy Reformation Day! Happy All Hallows Eve! Today is the day of the year that many choose to celebrate evil, death, devils, witches, and many other abhorrent things and ideas while others celebrate the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenburg. Today is also the eve of the day that the church celebrates the lives of all...
